Shift Handoff

The Shift Handoff feature provides a printable summary of the day's activities across all animals, designed to help with shift transitions.

What It Does

The handoff view shows a summary of everything that happened during the current day:

  • Which animals had activities and what types
  • Who logged each activity
  • Exit behaviors recorded (dogs)
  • Any behavior notes or stress indicators flagged
  • Animals that have not had any activity yet today

How to Use It

  1. Navigate to Handoff in the navigation menu
  2. Review the summary of today's activities
  3. Click Print to generate a printable version for the incoming shift

When to Use It

The shift handoff is most useful at:

  • End of a shift -- Print a summary for the incoming staff or volunteers so they know what happened and who still needs attention
  • Start of a shift -- Check the handoff to see what the previous shift accomplished
  • Staff meetings -- Review daily activity patterns across the shelter

Prioritizing the Incoming Shift

Use the handoff to identify priorities for the next shift:

  • Animals with no activity should be at the top of the list -- they've been waiting the longest
  • Dogs with overaroused exit behaviors may need a calmer activity or a cooldown period before the next interaction
  • Dogs with stress signals flagged during activities may need a different approach (shorter duration, quieter environment, different activity type)
  • Dogs with recent incidents should be handled by appropriately trained staff
  • Check the Intelligence Dashboard (staff/admin) for a data-driven view of which dogs need attention most

Tips

  • Print the handoff before the end of your shift so the next team has a physical reference
  • Pay attention to animals with no activity -- they should be priority picks for the incoming shift
  • Review exit behaviors to identify dogs that may need a different approach or a cooldown period
  • Use the handoff alongside the live dashboard for the most complete picture
  • Cross-reference with the Spotlight section on the dashboard, which highlights the top 3 dogs waiting longest
